- W2002129747 abstract "In the course of an Address dealing with the Age of the Earth which I gave before the Royal Physical Society in the Autumn of 1896, an estimate was made, in terms of millions of years, of the interval which separates the Lower Cambrian Period from our own day. That estimate was founded chiefly upon a computation of the time assumed to be required for the deposition of the aggregate thickness of all the normal limestones of marine origin which are known to have come into existence in Western Europe from the commencement of the Cambrian Period down to those forming at the present day. It was assumed, on grounds which were fully stated in that Address, that these limestones, on the whole, had been formed at a rate not essentially different from the mean rate at which there is reason for believing such deposits are forming now. The aggregate thickness of the limestones referred to, multiplied by the rate assumed, gave, as the length of that interval, some 700,000,000 years. I have not yet seen any reason for reducing that estimate.Since the Address was published some important modifications of many of the older views on the subject of geological time have been adopted by geologists. Some of these changes of opinion are, indeed, of so much importance in the present connection, that I should have felt quite justified in restating the whole of the facts and arguments, and in reviewing them by the light of modern ideas, had" @default.
