- W2002189411 abstract "One of the major factors in the progress of vascular surgery involving the abdominal aorta in the past two decades has been the advancement of angiography [I]. Such studies have proved increasingly safe and informative, revealing significant information about the aortic lesion as well as associated vascular abnormalities, and we as well as some other vascular surgeons now routinely employ preoperative angiography in the elective evaluation of arteriosclerotic abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) or aortoiliac occlusive disease [2]. One of the principal findings, and a major reason for the use of preoperative angiography, has been the high incidence of renal artery abnormalities coexistent with arteriosclerotic disease of the distal abdominal aorta. However, when arteriosclerotic stenoses or other lesions of the renal arteries are found in patients requiring aortic reconstruction for either aneurysmal or occlusive disease, the surgeon must decide if simultaneous correction of both lesions should be undertaken. To clarify indications for such decisions, the experience at the Massachusetts General Hospital with combined operations involving both aortic reconstruction and renal revascularization has been reviewed and evaluated." @default.
