- W2002201419 abstract "The theory of steady hindered sedimentation of polydisperse mixtures, of particles suspended in fluid, is extended to systems that involve nonsteady sedimentation. A computer model for the simulation of nonsteady sedimentation, in a one-dimensional force field, is used to illustrate salient implications of the theory as well as the method of computation. It is shown that the sedimentation profile is strongly dependent on particle size distribution and on total volume fraction occupied by particles in the dispersion. This computer model predicts segregation patterns of mixture components, the existence of inverted trajectories and travelling concentration waves, and that the nature of these waves depends on the properties of the dispersion. Wider particle size distribution and higher particle concentration are generally expected to enhance the formation of inverted trajectories and concentration waves, which in turn may significantly affect the rate of sedimentation of a substantial part of the size distribution and in particular the finer size end." @default.
