However, we believe that these seeming inconsistencies can be explained by a more detailed consideration of one of the key mechanisms underlying the development of the disease, namely the process of Aβ oligomerisation. Plasma amyloid-β concentrations in Alzheimer's disease: an alternative hypothesis – Authors' replyAllsop and colleagues offer a possible explanation, related to selective specificity of antibodies to monomeric and oligomeric Aβ, for seemingly inconsistent findings across studies reporting plasma Aβ concentrations in relation to dementia. We agree that it is of great importance to know what the assays are detecting and whether they can distinguish between monomeric and oligomeric Aβ. As such, our study1 can be seen as a first step that should trigger additional work. We think that the most important conclusion to be drawn from our study is that differences in proteins and peptides can be found in peripheral fluids, years before clinical onset of dementia that can help identify people at risk for Alzheimer's disease.
