- W2002353787 abstract "Abstract The solution properties [surface activity, critical micelle concentration (CMC)] of unsymmetrical N,N-di-(2-hydroxy-3-alkoxypropyl)ethanolamine and N-(2-hydroxy-3-alkoxypropyl)diethanolamine hydrochlorides and oxyethylates are described in connection with the structure of the amines. N,N-Di-(2-hydroxy-3-alkoxypropyl)ethanolamines had two alkoxy radicals, R and R′. R contained 7 or 8 carbon atoms, whereas the length of R′ was varied to provide amine with the hydrophile group in different positions. It was established that the run of surface tension isotherms of the amine hydrochlorides tended to be flatter as the nitrogen atom shifts to the center of the molecule. The increase of carbon atom number in R′ up to 3 had little effect on the CMC value, whereas further increase of the length of R′ was accompanied by a decrease of the CMC. The CMC values of N-(2-hydroxy-3-alkoxypropyl)diethanolamine surfactants were dependent on hydrocarbon chain length according to the equation, log CMC = A - B · nCH2, (A, B are constants, nCH2 is number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain). The micellization energy of the methylene group was −1.15 kT for the amines and −1.09 kT for their oxyethylates. From the CMC data the standard free energy of micelle formation was calculated using the phase separation approach followed by the determination of increments of micellization energy per definite surfactant fragments. The values of group increments were discussed in terms of their micelle favoring or opposing function." @default.
