- W2002400744 abstract "The specificities of spontaneously occurring antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in human diseases were characterized. These ANA showed speckled nuclear staining patterns on tissue-section substrates by immunofluorescence. Two distinct nuclear macromolecules could be differentiated by specific ANA. One was a macromolecule whose precipitin activity with antibody was destroyed by treatment with either ribonuclease or trypsin suggesting that RNA and protein were both associated with antigenicity. The other nuclear macromolecule, previously described and designated Sm, retained antigenicity after identical ribonuclease treatment. These antigens were further differentiated by immunological methods which showed distribution in separate areas of nuclei and cytoplasm in dividing tissue-culture cells. There was selective segregation of antibodies to these nuclear macromolecules in different connective tissue disorders." @default.
