It is usually defined as the difference, ΔP between confining (overburden) pressure, Pc and pore pressure, Pp. However a more general definition is σ′=Pc ‐ nPp where n is an effective stress coefficient which can be derived in a variety of ways. Seismic velocity is observed both in the field and in laboratory experiments to vary non‐linearly with effective stress. Furthermore, a form of hysteresis in velocity is observed when reservoir rocks are subjected to differing pore pressure histories. The resulting hysteresis can be quantified with an effective stress coefficient. This coefficient is frequently derived from laboratory velocity‐effective stress data at ultrasonic frequencies. This paper describes some recent laboratory based, rock physics experiments involving pore pressure history induced velocity hysteresis and the implications for reservoir 4D monitoring.Permalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1845168FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByReservoir Geomechanics Parameters Estimation Using Well Logs and Seismic Reflection Data: Insight from Sinjhoro Field, Lower Indus Basin, Pakistan18 December 2017 | Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, Vol. 43, No. 7 SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2004ISSN (print):1052-3812 ISSN (online):1949-4645Copyright: 2004 Pages: 2586 publication data© 2004 Copyright © 2004 Society of Exploration GeophysicistsPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished: 03 Jan 2005 CITATION INFORMATION Anthony F.
