- W2002681402 abstract "We review the main results of a survey, details of which are published elsewhere, on the composition, and temperature (T) and density (N) distribution of the ionic population of the Earth's plasmasphere using the Geos 1 thermal (≤ few eV) ion data set. We restrict ourselves to conditions of magnetic quiet. He + is an important constituent of the terrestrial plasmasphere and one of our main objectives is to present as much data on this ion as possible. We examine typical T and N profiles for the major ion species H + and He + . The relative density abundance He + /H + is a highly variable quantity but a value of several percent is fairly common. These two ion species are generally in thermal equilibrium and temperatures vary between 4 × 10 3 and 1.5 × 10 4 K with a tendency to increase with L value. We find an average equatorial cross-field gradient of ∼ 0.15 K/km. In the local time region 1700–2200 Hours H + as well as He + ion densities follow closely an inverse fourth power variation with L value. The minor ions O + , O ++ , D + , He ++ are also examined. The enhanced relative density abundance O ++ /O + , first reported from Geos 1 studies, is confirmed. There are instances where the mass/charge = 2 ion is mainly D + and others where it is predominantly He ++ . The minor ion temperatures are often consistent with thermal equilibration of the whole ionic population. Finally, we compare our thermal structure with recent studies." @default.
