- W2002808579 abstract "To the Editor:— In a practice in which contact with surgeons, physicians, and isotopologists is frequent, the ignorance of the hormone content of desiccated thyroid is striking. Few specialists in this field realize that desiccated thyroid contains 20μg to 30μg of triiodothyronine for each 100μg of thyroxine 1-3 and that the serum protein-bound iodine (PBI) level produced by medication with this animal product is produced by the thyroxine alone. The triiodothyronine (T3) stimulates metabolism without representation in the PBI value. Hence, the PBI level, during administration of desiccated thyroid, is not correlated with the total physiologic potency of medication. For example, a daily dose of 0.12 gm of desiccated thyroid may contain 0.2 mg of thyroxine and 60μg of T3. Since T3 has three or four times the calorigenic potency of thyroxine (T4), the caloric effect is that of 0.2 mg of T4 plus 0.18 mg of T3 as T4—a" @default.
