- W200287178 abstract "In the following viewpoint article, the author examines current changes in the cultural-technological behaviors of young, bright teaching professionals through a description of her own personal awakenings to current trends in engaged networking. She urges members to think about the future needs of a healthy and attractive Society as members prepare to discuss constitutional revisions at the 2010 International Convention in Spokane, Washington. International Parliamentarian Jean Gray recently visited the 2009 Colorado State Convention to update members about the upcoming revision of the International Constitution. She suggested local chapters and individual members examine their belief systems about the Society as a whole and about the direction the organization should go in the future. She reminded members that Delta Kappa Gamma is a grassroots organization and that individual members will have the opportunity to support new policies at the upcoming International Convention in Spokane, Washington. Current trends in technology suggest that as a professional organization, we must move forward in our use of networking technology if we are to attract the smartest and brightest teachers in the future. The Big Eye-Opener At the 2008 International Conference in Chicago, the Knowledge Works Foundation (Diamond, 2008) provided all general session participants with a futures map that forecasts the Foundation's vision of how the public will exist, work, and learn in the next decade. During the presentation, I remember jotting down new cyber vocabulary onto my new futures map as quickly as I could in order to check them out later in the privacy of my seemingly backward reality - e- formats, and political forces such as shout-out.org and grassfire.org, were just a few of the trends I noted. I felt as if I were in Gen-N therapy and could barely fire up my own cognitive schema to understand the implications of these changes for education and for our organization as a whole. Grass Roots Economy As the presentation progressed, I learned that as a group, the Net Generation prefers joining cyber groups and interacting with information that can make a difference in their lives (Feiertag & Berge, 2008; Tapscott, 1999). Barbara Diamond (2008) described this networking as a grass roots economy and explained that new generations gather to create, share, and self-govern information and resources that are relevant to their own generational needs (p. 4). The internet, cell phones, and the accessibility of laptop computers have expedited this group forming. Examples of this are the massive use of eBay, Craig's List, and Wikipedia. In her article, Change Agents, Diamond explains that grass roots economies are also springing up in education through alternative schools and online academies. Alternative schools can be attractive to students and their families because enrollees are empowered to manage their own learning worlds. Smart Networking Generations X, Y, and Z have grown-up in a world of social-networking. Chat rooms, blogs, and web-based scrap books were once thought of as novel trends. Now the spacers (MySpace) ana facers (Facebook) develop and thrive in networking communities from their cars, couches, or bedrooms. Cell phones and PDAs are considered required self-management accessories. Users fall asleep and wake-up to their favorite tunes, check calendars and breaking news, arrange virtual meetings, and pay bills before leaving their bedrooms. Today's students are connected and cooperating with each other much of the time when they are out of school. As a result, entering the world of school, where they are largely disconnected and working on their own, gives them an experience comparable to culture shock (Diamond, 2008, p. 5). Organizations that do not brand themselves as knowledgeable about social tools or do not offer experiences with grassroots economies risk appearing uninterested in attracting new and talented working professionals. …" @default.
