- W2002890836 abstract "Why did communism collapse as ruling system at the end of the 1980s? Certainly Tim Mason, with his occasionally fierce impatience, would have enjoined us to think 'historically' about this question. Proximity to the event would not have disqualified us, he would have insisted, at least so I believe from my almost twenty years of acquaintance. And despite his fervour for archives his compulsion to gather sources, and to find sources in the records of daily struggle that many of us often overlook he would not have let us plead that we did not yet possess the documentation. What then does it mean to think historically about this great development, perhaps the greatest of the century, certainly the greatest since the rise of fascism? In effect the historian seeks to structure reported developments in some interpretive framework that anticipates future inquiries, often usually about causal sequences. She or he tries to subsume them in categories of understanding that make the welter of texts apparently cohc're. Narrative is often the primary strategy but hardly the only one available. It need not be privileged. And it is not the task immediately attempted here. At most this essay attempts to suggest categories of interpretation that can plausibly orient future narration. Put simply, this piece seeks to anticipate" @default.
