• W2003115904 abstract "The effect of local terrain upon lapse rates and minimum temperature fields, and on vertical and lateral airflow within a shallow valley, was studied using relatively simple instrumentation to assess air pollution risk near the developing town of Narellan, New South Wales, Australia. Measurements obtained show that there is very rapid development of strong stability within the valley, especially when clear and calm nocturnal conditions favour strong, surface radiational cooling and katabatic airflow into low‐lying areas. Under such conditions, temperatures were found to increase at a rate of 0.25°C/m within the confines of a valley having modest surrounding relief (0–30 m). This indicates strong stability in the near‐surface layer and particularly favourable conditions for trapping air pollutants. In winter, nocturnal inversion breakdown within the valley after clear, calm nights is generally not achieved until 2.5 to 4 hours after sunrise. Data obtained using a vertical airflow sensor were found to be effective in identifying the time of breakdown of the nocturnal surface inversion. A relationship found between minimum screen‐level temperatures at varying elevations within the study area and early morning free‐air temperatures at corresponding heights above the valley floor, could be useful in appraising stability conditions over the centre of a valley where only screen data are available." @default.
