- W2003141821 abstract "Abstract The injection of an extract of whole male reproductive tracts in water or Ringer's solution into virgin moths resulted in stimulation of egg-laying. The injection of an extract of the male abdomen without the reproductive tract, alimentary canal and Malpighian tubules dissolved in Ringer's solution into virgins had a slight effect on egg-laying. Furthermore, the addition of the extract of male reproductive tracts to preparations which were used to record spontaneous discharges of motor neurones in the last abdominal ganglion (SMG IX) of virgin moths brought about an excitation of the activity of the ganglion. Consequently, it is concluded that there exists in the male reproductive tract an oviposition stimulating substance (OSS) which could be transferred during mating. It is also postulated that the OSS can pass through the walls of the female internal genitalia into the haemocoel, and that this substance can affect the activity of SMG IX and, therefore, the process of egg-laying." @default.
