- W2003143483 abstract "Observation of 60 mother-father-third-grade-child triads supplied information as to the interactional context of the children's producing novel solutions to various problems. Unpredicted cross-sex differences appeared. Contrary to what was hypothesized, girls' novel solutions in certain situations were associated with controlling behavior from fathers. Maternal controlling behaviors, however, were generally associated with less original solutions among girls and boys. Mothers appeared to be trying to assist their children who were having difficulty with the problems, but the assistance had the effect of narrowing the children's freedom to be original. Fathers in their demands seemed to be setting standards for more originality. The relevance of the study findings to issues of socialization is discussed." @default.
