- W2003145292 abstract "In this erudite, ambitious and original study, Brodbeck approaches the critically reconstituted text of the Mahābhārata as a literary whole possessing artistic unity, and argues that in order to understand it, one must appreciate its concern with matters of royal patriline. For example, he approaches Janamejaya’s snake sacrifice as a ‘royal re-fit of the Hāstinapura family history’ (pp. 260–61). Taking the royal line of the Bhāratas to be the spine of the epic, Brodbeck has organised his book according to the order of that lineage. Relatively early in the narrative Vaiśaṃpāyana recites two somewhat divergent genealogical lists (vaṃśa), one in verse and the other in prose. Brodbeck views them as complementary and deliberate literary constructions and compares them closely. Beyond the vaṃśas, he is also interested in stories and motifs that, he argues, have much to do with patrilineal matters. Among these are stories about son-less kings, kings obtaining a son without natural copulation, royal hunts, wounded deer escaping into the forest, and kings falling from heaven to earth. Brodbeck’s hypothesis is that the vaṃśas and other parts of the narrative are intended to legitimise a new regime by rewriting genealogies and occluding certain information. A relatively obvious type of occlusion that he points out is the omission, in the prose vaṃśa, of senior brothers when a younger brother has taken over the royal line." @default.
