- W2003165146 abstract "Current clinical practice for the assessment of transplant-associated arteriosclerosis (TAA) relies on surveillance coronary angiography. 1 Billingham M.E Pathology and etiology of chronic rejection of the heart. Clin Transplant. 1994; 8: 289-292 PubMed Google Scholar , 2 Fang J.C Rocco T Jarcho J Ganz P Mudge G.H Noninvasive assessment of transplant-associated arteriosclerosis. Am Heart J. 1998; 135: 980-987 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (41) Google Scholar This approach is limited by an inability to detect microvascular involvement or to provide information regarding the significance of narrowings that are typically diffuse and difficult to quantify. Measurement of coronary blood flow may provide a useful quantitative measurement of TAA because it sums the physiologic consequences of both hemodynamically important epicardial stenoses and diseased microvessels. Resting and hyperemic coronary blood flow can be assessed by more sophisticated techniques, but they require significant expertise and are not widely available outside of the research setting. 3 Wolford T.L Donohue T.J Bach R.G Drury J.H Caracciolo E.A Kern M.J Miller L.W Heterogeneity of coronary flow reserve in the examination of multiple individual allograft coronary arteries. Circulation. 1996; 93: 879-888 Crossref PubMed Scopus (1541) Google Scholar We hypothesized that the TFC may provide a quantitative physiologic assessment of TAA. Specifically, over the first 5 years after cardiac transplantation, we examined the relation between TFC and angiographic evidence of TAA." @default.
