- W200316667 abstract "This chapter discusses the role of external Ca2+ in excitation–contraction coupling. Some studies suggest that inflowing Ca might be responsible for maintaining force during longer lasting activity than for initiating contractile activity. Twitches and potassium contractures can correspondingly be performed in “Ca free” solutions, even in the presence of the Ca chelating agent EGTA. Potassium contractures at external Ca concentrations between 10−5 and 10−8 M (in the presence of Mg) were roughly as large as those under normal conditions however their plateau phase of maximum force was shorter. If Ca2+ was replaced by the same amount of Mg2+ the potential dependence of electrophysiological parameters, that is, thresholds for the initiation of action potentials and for delayed rectification, remained unaltered. The same was true for the contractile threshold. Merely the “steady state” inactivation curve for the contractile mechanism was drastically shifted by 20–30 mV towards more negative potentials after Ca removal. This shift probably occurs already at relatively high Ca2+ concentrations." @default.
