- W2003194975 abstract "Dry matter and nitrogen content of the shoot and its constituent organs and yield components have been measured in seven sunflower genotypes grown in the field at four levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 30, 90 and 150 kg N/ha). The genotypes were: the hybrid Hysun 30 and open-pollinated Sunfola 68.2 as commercial references; two experimental F1 hybrids together with their two inbred male parents; and the inbred cytoplasmic-male-sterile female parent common to both hybrids. All genotypes responded positively to applied N but the response for seed and vegetative characteristics was greatest in the two experimental hybrids and least in the two inbred male parental lines. The response of the two experimental hybrids are also reported as percentage heterosis over the male and female parents and over the mid-parent means. For many characters percentage heterosis varied with the N supply, in some cases from strongly positive to negative. The mean values over the four N supplies showed that in both hybrids heterosis increased from oil % seed dry weight to single seed weight to seed number per plant, with the consequence that oil yield per plant exhibited the greatest percentage heterosis. This was greater than the heterosis over the male parent and mid-parent means shown by the shoot, leaf, stem and petiole dry matter and N content but less than that of the vegetative characters over the female parent. Heterosis in vegetative characters changed between anthesis and maturity, which suggests different rates of development in the hybrids and their parents." @default.
