- W2003198568 abstract "The properties and the development of cerebral amino acid transport in capillaries were examined and compared with those in brain cells. The transport of amino acids through capillaries was as great or greater in newborn as in adult rat brain. In brains from both age groups, the transport of neutral essential amino acids was more rapid than that of the basic amino acids, whereas the transport of glutamate, glycine, GABA, taurine, and proline was below detectable limits. In contrast to amino acid uptake in brain tissue (slices or synaptosomes), uptake through capillaries in adult or new-born rats was not strongly Na+ dependent. Observations made in vivo were confirmed with capillaries isolated from brain. In capillaries in vitro there was high uptake of neutral amino acids, low uptake of GABA, and the uptake showed no Na+ dependence. The transport system for diamines, present in brain tissue, seems to be absent in capillaries." @default.
