Carnitine acetyl-, octanyl- and palmityl transferase activities were found in rat heart mitochondria and in rat heart microsomes prepared by ultracentrifugation and by CaCl2 precipitation. 2. Microsomes subjected to sucrose density gradient centrifugation were represented by single peak, and this peak contained each of the transferases measured. Gradients of mitochondria contained peaks of intact and fragmented mitochondria, both clearly separated from the microsomal region. 3. The marker data and the gradient data indicated that most of the transferase activity in the heart was associated with mitochondria, but that a small amount was also associated with the microsome-containing fraction." @default.
