Our calculated growth exponents of the ballistic deposition model agree with those of a recent experimental study of (1+1)-dimensional growth, and we demonstrate the inapplicability of a solid-on-solid model to this particular experiment. Arguments are made to explain why individual steps apparently roughen akin to the ballistic-deposition model, while the full crystal grows in a solid-on-solid fashion.
