- W2003234037 abstract "Statistical analysis is generally considered to be divided into two parts, the part called mathematical probability and the corroborative part sometimes called applied statistics. The first part being a mathematical theory is responsible only to its postulates and is not related directly to practical application. The second part, however, consists of the interpretation and application of the abstract concepts of mathematical probability and is the bridge required to connect mathematical probability and practical problems. A simple example of the relation between pure mathematics and the solution of practical problems is the application of ordinary euclidean geometry. It is well known that in solving a problem using euclidean geometry the “elements” of the problem must first be shown to reasonably correspond with the “elements” of the postulates, that is, the point, line, and plane. Likewise, in solving a problem by mathematical probability the “elements” of the problem must agree with the “elements” of the postulates of mathematical probability. If this condition is not satisfied an incorrect solution will result, just as it would in euclidean geometry when the “elements” are not good approximations of points, lines, and planes. It should be remembered that mathematically speaking no set of “elements” of a system of postulates can be identical with the elements of a practical problem. There are, however, close approximations that allow mathematical theory to be used in practical problems and it is the question of sufficiency of approximation on which applications of mathematics rests. The misapplication of statistical analysis, as well as any mathematical theory, is very often due to the lack of agreement between the “elements” of the postulates and those of the problem." @default.
