In the present paper the existing literature is extended to provide hybrid coordinate equations of motion for a finite element model of a flexible appendage attached to a rigid base undergoing unrestricted motions and some of the advantages of the finite element approach are noted. Transformations to the modal coordinates appropriate for the general case are provided.
