• W2003265469 abstract "Abstract In recent years, psychologists have demonstrated a growing interest in both basic research and clinical issues in the area of sleep and its disorders. One emerging topic in this field involves sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in the elderly. This paper reviews breathing disorders during sleep in the aged with an emphasis on identifying unresolved methodological issues, recommending improved technical approaches, detailing clinically relevant data, and suggesting key areas for future inquiry. Many important methodological issues remain to be clarified. The comparability and adequacy of several recording techniques are unknown. The validity and reliability of operational definitions of SDB events have not been demonstrated. Finally, the intensity at which SDB is pathological in the aged has not yet been determined. Clinically, although the exact prevalence rates of various levels of SDB in the aged have not yet been established, several lines of evidence suggest that low levels of SDB are virtually ubiquitous in this population, and that levels of SDB considered pathological in younger subjects may occur in as many as one-third of the aged. Risk factors predictive of SDB in younger subjects such as increasing age and weight, male gender, and snoring may predict nocturnal breathing dysfunction in geriatric sleep disorders center patients, although the utility of these predictors in the general aged population is still uncertain. Finally, mixed evidence concerning the impact of SDB on daytime parameters leaves uncertainty regarding the functional significance of the disorder on the aged. Further research is needed to fully document the characteristics and consequences of this extremely common disturbance of the elderly." @default.
