- W2003268307 abstract "To evaluate the prevalence of inappropriate behavior by caregivers towards Alzheimer's patients. Also, to reveal the most common types of mistreatment. All consecutive Alzheimer's patients' caregivers were evaluated for misbehavior towards patients. A volunteer student collected data for a two-month period. All patients met the DSM-IV & NINCDS-ADRDA criteria for possible Alzheimer's disease. Hired caregivers/professional services (i.e., home health aides, social workers, APS) were not assessed. Caregivers were evaluated for the following misbehaviors: verbal abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect (i.e., delay in washing the patient, leaving patients without supervision). Frequency of misbehavior was assessed according to the following: more than once/day, 5–7 times/week, 3–4 times/week, 1–2 times/week, rare or never. A total of 512 caregivers were evaluated (* refers to low sample size): Husbands & wives appear to have the greatest tendency to verbally & emotionally mistreat the Alzheimer's patient. It is important for caregivers to be taught to employ coping skills and utilize the services of support networks." @default.
