- W2003310366 abstract "PURPOSE: Exercise is a key component of effective treatment of the metabolic syndrome. This study was aimed to elucidate whether a regular aerobic exercise reduce the visceral fat and improve the arterial stiffness in middle-aged men with abdominal obesity. METHODS: We randomly assigned forty-six sedentary middle-aged subjects (51.0±0.9 y: mean±SE) to two groups: one that engaged in 30–60 minutes of aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week for 3 months (exercise group: Ex, n=36), and one age-matched group that underwent no modification in physical activity (control group: C, n=10). Indices of body fat, serum lipids and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), index of arterial stiffness, were measured at baseline and after 3 months of exercise training (Ex) or after 3 months of no modification in activity (C). Visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) at the umbilical level were determined by computed tomographic (CT) scanning. RESULTS: Significant increases in the exercise tolerance and serum HDL-C were observed following the 3-month exercise training period. Also, there were significant decreases in body weight, serum LDL-C and RLP-C after the exercise training in Ex, however, no change was detected in these parameters in C. According to the baseline CT examination, there were 16 abdominal obesity (VFA>100cm2: AbOb) in Ex (Ex-AbOb), and 5 in C (C-AbOb). No abdominal obesity in Ex (Ex-N) was 20. 3-Month aerobic exercise training reduced VFA in Ex-AbOb (139.6±7.3cm2 to 113.4±7.9cm2: p<0.001) and also in Ex-N (58.0±3.9cm2 to 48.6±3.7cm2: p<0.001). No significant change in VFA was observed in C and C-AbOb. BaPWV of Ex-AbOb decreased from 1340.9±39.3cm/ sec to 1281.6±39.1 cm/sec (p<0.05) through the exercise training, however, no significant change was detected in Ex-N and in C-AbOb. There was a significant correlation between the changes in VFA and the changes in baPWV in Ex (r=0.338, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: 3-Month aerobic exercise training reduced visceral adiposity and improved arterial stiffness especially in abdominally obese. This improvement of arterial stiffness through aerobic exercise training may be partially caused by the reduction in visceral fat." @default.
