- W2003402214 abstract "We report on the ESR of Gd 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ in MPd 3 ( M = Sc , Y , La , Ce , Lu ) and CeRh 3 intermetallic compounds. X-band (9.3 GHz) measurements were carried out between 0.6 and 40 K. Below T = 1.6 K we used our new continuously working He 3 cryostat. The Gd resonance in ScPd 3 and YPd 3 shows a weak bottleneck behaviour. In CePd 3 the Er resonance was identiied as a Γ 7 ground state with a g -value of 6.78. In ScPd 3 adn YPd 3 we found a Γ 6 ground state for Er possibly affected by a near lying Γ 8 anisotropic quartet and a Γ 7 excited crystal field level for Er 3+ in ScPd 3 and YPd 3 . The Yb resonance was to be seen in all MPd 3 and in CeRh 3 with Γ 7 ground state. In order to extract the linewidth data, a detailed analysis of the Yb 3+ resonance spectra has been carried out taking into account both Yb isotopes 171 and 173. Third order corrections for determining the hyperfine constant of Yb 171 became important. The g -shift of all Yb resonance in MPd 3 is the same within the error bars, whereas the linear part of the temperature dependence of linewidth (Korringa slope) scales with the markedly different Pauli susceptibilities. An exponential contribution to the temperature dependence of linewidth in all measured compounds is observed at temperature T > 6 K and is related to direct relaxation of the 4f-momentum via the host phonons (Orbach process)." @default.
