- W2003456716 abstract "To the Editor: We agree with Yamazaki et al ( 1 Yamazaki H. Nakamura S. Aibe N. et al. Does good initial response during radiotherapy inversely imply poor survival outcome in NSCLC?. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys. 2014; 91: 244-245 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (1) Google Scholar ) that our finding ( 2 Brink C. Bernchou U. Bertelsen A. et al. Locoregional control of non-small cell lung cancer in relation to automated early assessment of tumor regression on cone beam computed tomography. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys. 2014; 89: 916-923 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (54) Google Scholar )—that marked tumor regression is associated with a decreased tumor control in a histologic subgroup of lung cancer patients—is intriguing. We agree that this observation, if confirmed in future studies, would certainly be relevant to clinical strategies where dose time fractionation is adapted according to volume regression. In Regard to Brink et alInternational Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, PhysicsVol. 91Issue 1PreviewTo the Editor: We have read the recent study by Dr Brink and colleagues (1) with great interest. This is a very interesting and important finding to pursue because it reverses the conventional consensus that good tumor shrinkage warrants the better outcome. For example, in early glottic cancer (2), cervical cancer (3), and lung cancer (4), as they cited, early response is a good surrogate for better prognosis. Therefore, their conclusion may refer to a reverse conclusion that the complete response and partial response groups may have had poorer survival outcomes than the stable disease and progression disease groups.
