- W2003508594 abstract "Since the observation of Fleming, 1 in 1929, that the growth of certain bacteria in cultures is inhibited by the introduction of a mold, many articles have appeared in the literature on the treatment of infectious processes with penicillin. At a naval hospital within the continental limits there was afforded an opportunity of evaluating the efficacy of this treatment in otolaryngologic diseases, particularly in regard to the effect on suppurative otitis media and complicating mastoiditis. Because of the difficulties in obtaining sufficient quantities of the drug, most of the experimental work with penicillin in otolaryngologic diseases was limited to local use. Investigators 2 have used this drug after mastoidectomy, instilling it through a small rubber drainage tube after almost completely closing the postauricular incision. The patients whose cases are reported in this paper were all treated with a sulfonamide compound, and penicillin was administered only after the infection had been demonstrated to" @default.
