- W2003564862 abstract "ABSTRACT The Machakos Hills were sparsely populated before the advent of colonial administration at the end of the nineteenth century. The population grew rapidly after 1900. Most of the avialable land was occupied by farmers, and changes in land-use practices and their intensity caused extensive surface and gully erosion by the 1930s. Experimental data show that the soils are highly erodible and that many of the erosive storms occur at the beginning of the rainy seasons when crop cover is poor. Erosion rates of 5 to 10 mm/yr are common on poorly conserved cultivated or grazing land. Mechanical conservation measures, such as bench terracing, have been effecitive in controlling erosion from most of the cultivated land, but most of the grazing land is still being eroded severely. Local farmers appear to have a poor understanding of the relationships between overstocking and erosion, and they are relutant to destock." @default.
