- W2003588443 abstract "Visceral abdominal fat or tissue (VAT) has been correlated with an increased health risk. Determination of sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) (Parr & Haight, 2006) may be used to predict VAT in clients in behavioral weight loss programs (BWLP). PURPOSE: To assess changes VAT, SAD, and other anthropometric variables before and after a BWLP. METHODS: Physiological characteristics of overweight and obese subjects [(Men n=10, Women n=27); Age=49±12 yr] were examined before and after a 4-month BWLP (Brownell, 2004). SAD, waist (WC) and hip circumferences (HC), demographic data, and physiological responses to GXTs (modified Balke to ∼75% HR max) were collected. RESULTS: Pre-post differences for body weight (BW), SAD, VAT, BMI, BF%, WC, HC, and Total Exercise Time (ExT) were significant (p < 0.01) [(Mean ± S.D.), (Pre-, Post-): BW (97.6 ±17.2, 92.9 ±18.0 kg); SAD (26.6±3.1, 24.0±3.1 cm); VAT (10.7±2.5, 8.6±2.4 lb); BMI (34.6 ± 5.3, 32.6 ±5.8 kg/m2); BF% (40.8 ±10.8, 37.8 ±10.9); WC (103 ±11, 99 ±12 cm); HC (119±14, 115±12 cm)]. There was no significant difference in weight loss or SAD loss by gender; however, ExT, %BF, HC, and W/H ratio were different between the sexes. Pre-BW (r=0.69; p<0.05) was correlated with SAD reduction. SAD reduction was not significantly correlated to weight loss. CONCLUSION: SAD may be an important variable to assess health risk in obese clients; however, additional studies are needed to delineate relationships between VAT and physiological characteristics during weight loss." @default.
