- W2003691421 abstract "Chronic exposure to cold air has been associated with increased bronchial responsiveness (BR) in athletes. However, another factor may be increased exposure to inhalant allergens. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate BR regarding atopic disposition and different seasons (different allergen and cold air exposure). METHODS: 23 students (15F, 18M) of Swiss Sports High School Davos aged 16,2 ± 1,2 years served as subjects. The athletes were divided into two groups depending on whether they were atopic (n = 8) or not atopic (skin prick test). BR evaluations consisted of pulmonary function tests after methacholine challenge and exercise challenge in cold environment (minus 20°C in a climatic chamber). Both tests were carried out in summer and again in winter. The study was analyzed, using a 3-way ANOVA. RESULTS: Pulmonary function after methacholine challenge showed a greater BR in atopic than in not atopic athletes (P = 0.03). Overall (P < 0.001), but especially in atopics (P < 0.001) a more increased BR was observed in summer than in winter. Non-atopic athletes showed no seasonal differences. Cold exercise challenge showed an increase of BR in summer only in atopics (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: An increased BR is observed during the summer season, and it is strongly associated with atopic disposition. BR is increased in atopic athletes during the summer season, when compared to non-atopic athletes, in whom no seasonal differences are found. This response of the athletes may reflect exposure to allergens. Our results do not support the suggestion that increased BR in athletes results from chronic inhalation of cold air during exercise." @default.
