- W2003703362 abstract "1. Determination of pulmonary, branchial and cutaneous gas exchange (.VO2 and .VCO2) were made on aquatic salamanders acclimatized to 5, 15 and 25°C under photoperiods of LD 8 : 16 and LD 16 : 8. 2. Differences in photoperiod did not significantly affect the metabolic rate or partitioning of gas exchange at any of the experimental conditions. 3. The pulmonary surfaces participated the least in gas exchange and never accounted for more than 10 per cent of the .VINO2 or 12 per cent of the .VCO2 The lungs have a small total internal surface area, but occupy a large volume; they apparently function more as a hydrostatic organ than as a gas exchanger. 4. When used, the gills accounted for 54 per cent of the total .V O2 at 5°C and 60 per cent at 25°C; a similar increase in .VCO2 through the branchial surfaces with increasing temperature was observed. 5. When undisturbed at lower temperatures Necturus relies largely on the cutaneous surfaces for gas exchange. However, at higher temperatures or when the animals are excited, the branchial surfaces assume the dominant role in external respiration." @default.
