- W2003775243 abstract "A statistical ‘semi-annual’ variation of the amplitudes of the Sa-variation has been deduced from the records of the Potsdam-Seddin-Niemegk observatory (52°N) for the period 1912–1961, with secondary maxima in April and September/October and a clearly pronounced secondary minimum in May. Two different methods have been used to investigate this variation. The most important results are: With increasing sunspot number the amplitude of the ‘semi-annual’-variation increases and the secondary maximum in September/October assumes a more distinct form even for an extensively selected material of extremely quiet days. (This maximum is only weakly indicated during periods with low sunspot numbers.) Statistical investigations reveal that the ‘semi-annual’ variation shows a persistent periodicity. The amplitude of this variation has a strong correlation with the sunspot number. Some first attempts have been made to explain this ‘semi-annual’ variation on the basis of the model of the atmospheric symmetric dynamo only as well as by taking into consideration magneto-hydrodynamic causes in addition." @default.
