The levels of oxidized and reduced pyridine nucleotides and the DPNH oxidase activity have been determined in the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis GL during exponential multiplication, before synchronized cell division and in the maximum stationary phase. 2. 2. The levels of DPNH (0.36 mμmole/mg protein) and TPNH (0.46 mμmole/mg protein) found in cells of the exponential-growth phase decrease during the synchriny-inducing temperature treatment to 0.27 mμmole/mg protein for DPNH and 0.33 mμmole/mg protein for TPNH. 3. 3. During the hour priot to synchronous division, a significant (30–43%) in the DPNH content was observed. 4. 4. The DPNH oxidase activity in cells of the exponential-growth phase is 5.2 mμmoles DPHN oxidized per min/mg protein. At the end of the temperature treatment and prior to synchronized division the activity is 3.1 and 3.3 mμmoles/mg protein, respectively. 5. 5. The results are compared with published data on pyridine nucleotide levels in Tetrahymena pyriformis W and tissues of higher animals." @default.
