- W2003896543 abstract "Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) is one of the main contributors to the benthic megafauna biomass in São Paulo State littoral coast (Brazil). Routine respiration (R) and ammonia–N excretion (U) rates, defined as those measured during minimum but uncontrolled activity, were quantified in different-sized shrimps at stages C/D0, A/B, D1 and D2 of the moulting cycle in a flowthrough system. Linear regressions for R and U rates vs body mass for each stage are presented. Respiration rates showed lower levels during stages C/D0, increasing at stages D1, D2, and through ecdysis and reaching the highest levels at stages A and B. Ammonia excretion rates reached lowest levels at D2 stage, showing a conspicuous increase after ecdysis, with high levels at stages A/B and intermediary levels at stages C/D0 and D1. These patterns expressed in terms of the relation O:N (oxygen consumed to nitrogen excreted) indicate a shift from protein to lipid-dominated metabolism at D2 stage. An weighted average of R and U rates for a whole moult cycle, taking into account different moult stages duration and respective physiological rates, was approximately 30% greater than the traditional intermoult stage rate for juvenile shrimps, values that can lead to errors in bioenergetic models for the species." @default.
