- W2003983146 abstract "A fast and reliable method has been developed for the investigation of dominance relationships in groups of weaned pigs. Interactions between pairs was tested in a narrow, straight place. Two piglets were placed at opposite ends of a narrow lane and the animal that forced the other out backwards was considered to be dominant. By this method, we investigated the development and stability of dominance order in groups of eight weaned pigs selected from different litters. Although the hierarchy formed rapidly and seemed to be linear (values of Landau-index > 0.9), the structure of the dominance order had not become stabilized. Even the animal of alfa-position was changing within this quasi-linear structure. Applying computer simulation, it can be established that the changes of position happened non-randomly. We made an attempt to increase the stability of the dominance orders by influencing the hierarchy artificially. At grouping, an individual which was twice as heavy as the others was put among weaned pigs as a potential alfa animal. By this grouping method, a reduction of nearly 50% was obtained in the numbers of position changes in the dominance order." @default.
