- W2003991271 abstract "In vitro experiments with Himasthla quissetensis revealed that excystment involves enzy- matic weakening of the cyst wall and vigorous muscular movements of an activated metacercaria. Maxi- mum excystment occurred following 1) low pH pretreatment, 2) sodium dithionite pretreatment, and 3) a complete excystment medium containing both trypsin and bile salts. Excystment occurred to a lesser degree in the complete medium when all pretreatment was excluded and also in some instances when only partial pretreatment was given. Trypsin alone, with or without pretreatment, caused excystment, but the effect of bile salts alone under the same conditions was minimal. Excystment has been reported or studied for several echinostomes. Howell (1970) stud- ied Echinoparyphium serratum. Danley (1973) described an effective method for ex- cysting Parorchis acanthus, and Fried and Roth (1974) studied aspects of in vitro excyst- ment for the same species. Fried and Grigo (1975) and Fried and Butler (1978) reported on the excystment of Echinoparyphium flex- um, and Echinostoma revolutum, respective- ly. The present study reports on conditions found effective for the in vitro excystment of Himasthla quissetensis metacercariae and in- cludes observations on the behavior of ex- cysting worms." @default.
