- W2004014117 abstract "English summary With regard to the process of the construction of history, Chinese thought draws a clear distinction between two «moments», which I call the «moment» of historiography (here to be understood as the systematic recording from day to day of the significant events as they happen) and the « moment » of historiology (here to be understood as the philosophical analysis of the meaning of the events as recorded by historiography ). Now historiography originates in divination, insofar as the most primitive records of events were merely the records of divinations — especially successful divinations - performed daily for all manner of events of any significance. That is the reason why in ancient China the function of historiographer (shi) was the same as the function of diviner (shi also) and as the function of scribe (again shi). It follows that the Chinese historiography, and in its wake historiology, have been strongly influenced by hermeneutic speculations rooted in the Chinese tradition of divination, especially scapulimantic divination. Taking into account such an influence, this paper describes the hermeneutical characteristics of The Spring and Autumn Annals and of their commentary according to the Gongyang tradition." @default.
