- W2004060486 abstract "Abstract. This paper describes feeding experiments conducted with small eels under holding conditions and temperatures designed to mimic those on the farm. It was shown that at temperatures up to 16°C highest daily consumptions occur with frequent feeding. This is because gut passage is slowed and limits consumption at these temperatures. At higher temperatures feed consumption and conversion can be increased by feeding meals at a defined optimum frequency which was shown to rise with temperature. This optimum frequency of feeding is associated with lowered activity levels which spare energy for growth. The underlying factor is a preference for meals at a size and feeding interval corresponding with the capacity and emptying of the stomach. Optimum conditions for growth are shown to occur at 26.5°C with maximum consumptions at a feeding frequency of either three or four times per 24-h day. This optimum temperature is shown to be lowered as daily feed intake is reduced." @default.
