- W2004125703 abstract "This book discusses the ways in which selective remembering and forgetting of the past have been harnessed to the construction of politically useful identities and narratives in the ‘New South Africa’. The author is a US professor of urban planning who was ‘fascinated by how sites of memory became vehicles for always remembering and never forgetting’ (p. 220). He wrote the book after visiting South Africa several times from 1998 onwards, teaching a two-month stint at Wits University, and then taking students from Colgate University (New York) around the country visiting various heritage sites. It is useful to have an external perspective on the country's past from such an erudite scholar, but perhaps because of its genesis in Murray's teaching work, the book seems to be aimed more at graduate students than at specialists in the field. He starts (and continues at various points in the book) with a useful summary of conventional thinking about memoryscapes in critical heritage studies, although the positioning of history as ‘objective’ is now a bit old-fashioned and no longer ‘widely accepted’ (p. 14) – this could have been more clearly explained in the text for a student audience. Thereafter, Murray gives a potted history of South Africa from the time of the South African War (1899–1902). A number of comparisons are made between South African museums and US institutions such as the Holocaust Memorial, but without sufficient detail on the US institutions to be fully comprehensible to a South African student audience. Nevertheless, the later chapters of the book might make very useful teaching material in South African universities, as well as for graduate students elsewhere." @default.
