- W2004180701 abstract "The marine haptophycean Pavlova lutheri (Droops) Green strain Plymouth CC 75 and Pavlova spec. were gron at 18°C, normal air (0.035vol.% CO2) and a light dark rhythm of 12:12h (intensity 16.8 W m-2) in an artifical sea-water medium (35%o salinity). Algae were irradiated with UV-A (Philips lamps TL 60W/09N, intensity 2.0 or 11.7W m-2) or with UV-B (TL 40 W/01, 1.68W m-2) for up to 5 h. Contents of chlorophyll a and c1+c2 were mainly reduced by UV-A of high intensity and by UV-B. β-carotene was the most sensitive pigment. The content of fucoxanthin was reduced whereas that of neofucoxanthin increased No (or a small) damaging effect on pigments was found after UV-A exposure of low intensity (2 W m-2). Uptake rates of 15N-ammonium of both Pavlova species were affected by UV-A of high intensity and UV-B radiation. The pattern of 15N labelled amino acids and pool sizes varied after UV irradiance: a strong damage by UV-A with low intensity on 15N incorporation into the amino acids was observed. Pools of glutamine, glycine, threonine and phenylalanine were enhanced and that of glutamate reduced. Pavlova lutheri was less sensitive to UV exposure than Pavlova spec. The results are discussed with reference to damage of the enzymes of the nitrogen and carbon metabolism." @default.
