- W2004186275 abstract "The accumulation of leaf area by pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) was studied throughout the development of plants grown in pots in the field and supplied with varying levels of nitrogen. Nitrogen supply affected mainstem leaf area by affecting individual leaf size, not the number of leaves produced. The contribution of basal tillers to total leaf area was dependent on nitrogen supply. Basal tillers appeared and developed when the whole plant nitrogen concentration was greater than that necessary to achieve the maximum relative growth rate. Basal tiller appearance was linked to mainstem leaf number. Leaf appearance on all basal tillers ceased with the commencement of elongation of the mainstem, reducing leaf number and leaf area of successive tillers. The relationship between the relative rate of leaf area expansion (RLER, cm2 cm−2 day−1) and whole plant nitrogen concentration changed with development. Prior to panicle initiation, maximum RLER was achieved at a nitrogen concentration of 1.65% of whole plant dry weight; this decreased to 1.3% during later developmental phases. A parallel relationship was observed between leaf nitrogen concentration and RLER: critical values of leaf nitrogen concentration were higher than critical values of whole plant nitrogen concentration. The critical whole plant nitrogen concentrations necessary to achieve the maximum RLER during development were similar to those previously reported for relative growth rate.
