- W2004198566 abstract "In a recent paper, Longo-Mbenza et al. have explored one aspect of the intriguing issue of coronary artery diseases (CAD) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. The authors reported their results regarding the prevalence of H. pylori infection in African patients with cardiovascular disease, the features of seropositive and seronegative groups, and the modification of metabolic variables after anti-H. pylori treatment. A total of 62.4% of included subjects (suffering from angor pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, acute stroke, arterial hypertension and congestive heart failure, overweight/obesity, chronic coronary heart disease, carotid plaques, diffuse atherosclerosis) were tested positive for H. pylori antibody. A number of components of metabolic syndrome were found associated to H. pylori seropositivity. The level of uric acid, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, fibrinogen, blood pressure significantly decreased after 3 weeks of antibiotic treatment. In the conclusion, the authors stated ”H. pylori infection might be one of the risk factors of atherosclerosis through inflammation and modulation of glucose, pulse pressure, and lipid by low cost antibiotics in our developing country”[1]. Concerning the last sentence, the authors probably wanted to state that the above mentioned risk factors can be corrected by antibiotic treatment." @default.
