- W2004207206 abstract "The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of endurance training employing solely concentric contractions on susceptibility to lengthening contraction-induced muscle injury in young adult and senescent rats. Young (3-mo) and senescent (23-mo) male Fischer 344 rats were randomly assigned to either a control or exercise training group (young control, YC; old control, OC; young trained, YT; old trained, OT). Exercise training consisted of 10 weeks of treadmill running at approximately 70% of VO2max (45 min/day, 5 days/wk). Active mechanical properties of the diaphragm muscle from all 4 groups were subsequently measured in vitro at 26ô. Muscle injury was then induced by a series of 20 lengthening contractions (20% strain from optimal muscle length, 1 contraction every 5-sec). Ten minutes after the injury protocol, there was no difference in diaphragm muscle injury susceptibility between young and old rats. However, there was a significant main effect for training (P < 0.05). Before injury (baseline), Po averaged 23.3 and 22.1 N/cm2 in control and trained rats respectively. After injury, Po averaged 61% (± 1.7 SE) of baseline in the control animals and 66% (± 1.6 SE) of baseline in the trained animals. These findings indicate that endurance exercise employing solely concentric contractions exerts a small but significant protective effect against susceptibility to lengthening contraction-induced injury in both young and senescent rats. Supported by a grant from the American Lung Association and New York Affiliate." @default.
