The occurrence of all the deaths within 48 hours of admission emphasized the urgency of early diagnosis and the need for prompt institution of appropriate therapy. Penicillin, given in the belief that pneumococcal pneumonia was being treated, proved ineffective with this series of patients.The current series also demonstrates that the picture presented by patients with Friedländer's pneumonia is not sufficiently characteristic to permit a diagnosis solely on clinical grounds.
