- W2004231681 abstract "When major histoincompatibility is excluded the inoculation of the chorioallantoic membrane of the chicken embryo with lymphocytes, or whole blood, leads to the formation of small lesions or pocks. These are fewer, smaller, and later in appearance than the pocks which characterize major histoincompatibility, but may be counted on the fifth day after inoculation. There is a direct relationship between the number of inoculated cells and the number of these small pocks, indicating that each pock is determined by one donor cell. Donors are easily categorized as effective, “HI,” or ineffective, “LO,” with respect to the number of these pocks which their blood elicits. The number of these pocks elicited by HI donors is directly related to the splenomegaly produced by intravenous injection of the embryo. These two measures of the competency of HI donors parallel the GVHR competence these donors display in response to major alloantigen. Irradiation of the inoculum with 300 kVp x-rays reveals a conventional LD 50 , but a highly unconventional dose response curve unlike those previously reported for hematopoietic cells. Immunization of the donors with embryo spleen increases the pock-initiating efficiency of donor blood, but the increase is transitory. Reimmunization accelerates, heightens, and prolongs the response. The maximal number of pocks obtained after immunization is a direct, logarithmic function of the number of immunizations. The size of the pocks is an inverse, arithmetic function of the number of immunizations. This is interpreted to suggest that the number of donor mitoses which occur in a pock is limited and that the increased number of pocks achieved by immunization is obtained at the expense of the number of donor cell mitoses which can occur within the individual pock. We conclude that the small, Day 5 pocks produced in the absence of major histoincompatibility are an expression of minor histoincompatibility." @default.
