- W2004268210 abstract "A fissioning nucleus is described by a collective model with degrees of freedom which permit the nucleus to undergo internal oscillation, surface distension and rotation. Photoabsorption takes place primarily through the excitation of intrinsic charge density oscillations (as in the Steinwedel-Jensen model), but the nucleus is then unstable to fission, in that adiabatic distension of the surface may so drain the energy from the interior oscillation that the fission barrier effectively disappears. The same set of hydrodynamic assumptions are consistently applied to the system whether in a divided or coalesced state, and consequently the separation vector in the final state is continuously related to the collective variables of the parent nucleus. Calculation of the matrix element for photofission is then straightforward. Numerical calculations are confined to symmetric binary fission of 238U." @default.
