- W2004276516 abstract "SUMMARY This study presents an interpretive picture of young female readers of mass-marketed girls'-series fiction in the first decades of the 20th century. In opposition to some book historians who argue that by the late 19th and early 20th centuries reading had become a private and passive rather than a public activity, this study provides documentation of the ways in which girls' engagement with this mass-marketed fiction was intensely public and meaningful. Inscriptions in over 200 series books give some indication of the ways in which the books were acquired, circulated and valued. Fan letters, written by girls to their favorite authors, offer compelling evidence of the collective nature of series book reading. Finally, this study argues that the study of girls' series books and their readers is important for what they reveal about a distinctively new female culture of reading in the early part of the century." @default.
