Abstract The author examines the dependency of the abundances of CH and H2 on the ratio of total-to-selective extinction, R, for a sample of diffuse clouds with Av < 2 mag. It is found that >N(CH)< and >N(H2)< decrease by about factors of 4 and 3, respectively, in going from >R< ≈ 2.9 to 3.9. For H2, this decrease appears to be consistent with a combination of both the loss of available grain surface area through coagulation and a increase in the UV radiation field through a decrease in AUV. Data for lines of sight with Av > 2 mag indicate that the general decrease of N(CH), and probably N(H2), with R persists for regions where gas-phase chemistry should dominate. Because it can be used to estimate UV extinction, R may be a suitable parameter for chemical modeling of diffuse cloud environments.
